Audio drops out

These notes are appropriate for anyone with this situation:
- You run a DynEd course and after a while, all of a sudden the audio drops out.
- You can no longer hear the audio even if you go back to previous screens that had audio before
- If you exit the course and come back in, the audio returns
- Follow these instructions in this order:

1) Confirm that there are no other applications running while you are running DynEd:
- As a test, please quit all other applications
- In particular, quit any application that might have an audio component such as Internet Messenger, Skype, Yahoo Messenger, Google chat, AOL messenger, e-mail
- See if this fixes the problem.

2) Update the DynEd Courseware:
- /cgi-bin/WebObjects/faq.woa/wa/faq?id=121
- See if this fixes the problem.

3) Update to the latest QuickTime*:
- Go to Start->Programs->QuickTime->Uninstall QuickTime
- Uninstall Everything
- Download the latest version of QuickTime from here: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html
- Download it to your desktop
- Double click the downloaded file on your desktop and install it.
- See if this fixes the problem.

4) Update to the latest version of DirectX from Microsoft:
- Go to Start->Run...
- In the box, type in: dxdiag
- Click Ok
- Click the "System" tab
- Confirm the DirectX version?
- Click the "Audio" tab
- What is the Hardware acceleration slider set to?
- Try changing to different settings
- You can download DirectX from:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/search.aspx?q=directx
- See if this fixes the problem.

5) Modify the QuickTime settings:
- Go to Start->Settings->Control Panel->QuickTime
- Click the "Audio" tab
- Change the audio-out setting to "WaveOut" (or SafeMode)
- See if this fixes the problem.

6) If the audio still drops out:
- Send us the dyned.log file: /cgi-bin/WebObjects/faq.woa/wa/faq?id=173
- Tell us about how long it takes for the audio to drop out.
- Tell us if the audio drops out equally in all courses or does it just drop out in one course?
- Tell us if the audio drops out equally in all lessons or does it just drop out in one lesson?
- Tell us if the audio drops out each time at the same point in the lesson
- Do each of these test after the audio drops out but before you exit the course:

Test 1)
- Click the DynEd Microphone button
- Record your voice
- Click the Headphones button to play it back
- Can you hear yourself?

Test 2)
- Go to "Start->Programs->Accessories->Entertainment->Sound Recorder"
- Record your voice
- Play it back
- Can you hear yourself?

Test 3)
- Go to "Start->Settings Control Panel->Sounds and Audio Devices"
- Click the "Sounds" tab
- Highlight one of the items in the "Program Events" area
- Click the "->" (play button)
- Can you hear the system sounds?
